Eric Swalwell, demokratisk ledamot av USA:s kongress, avbryter sin kampanj för att bli Kaliforniens nye guvernör efter anklagelserna om att han våldtagit en kvinna och förgripit sig på flera andra. Det rapporterar flera medier.
”Till familj, medarbetare, vänner och supportrar, jag är djupt ledsen över de missbedömningar jag tidigare gjort”, skriver Swallwell på X. Samtidigt fortsätter han att förneka sexbrottsanklagelserna.
Swalwell var en av favoriterna till att bli Demokraternas kandidat när Gavin Newsoms ersättare som Kaliforniens guvernör ska väljas i höst.

Eric Michael Swalwell ( SWAHL-well; born November 16, 1980) is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative from California's 14th congressional district since 2023, having previously represented the 15th district from 2013 to 2023. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Born in Sac City, Iowa, Swalwell graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2003 and from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2006. As a college student, he interned for U.S. Representative Ellen Tauscher. After law school, Swalwell worked as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County. He later served two years on the Dublin City Council. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, defeating 40-year incumbent Pete Stark.
Swalwell was a candidate for governor of California in 2026, forgoing re-election to the United States House of Representatives, and was the top-polling Democrat in that race, before he suspended his campaign following allegations of sexual assault.
