Brexitförhandlaren: Vill inte ha tävling i avreglering
EU:s prioritet i brexitförhandlingarna med Storbritannien är jämlika spelregler så att konkurrensen handlar om skicklighet, innovation och kvalitet – inte om att försämra sociala och miljömässiga normer.
Det skriver EU:s chefsförhandlare Michel Barnier i en debattartikel på Project Syndicate.
”Vi vet att en tävling i sociala och miljömässiga normer [...] bara leder till en kapplöpning mot avreglering (race to the bottom, reds anm) som gör arbetare, konsumenter och planeten till förlorare”, skriver han.
I stället efterlyser Barnier en framtida relation med Storbritannien ”som bygger på ömsesidig tillit och gemensamma intressen”.

The race to the bottom is a socio-economic phrase to describe government deregulation of the business environment, or reduction in tax rates, in order to attract or retain economic activity in their jurisdictions. An outcome of globalization and free trade, it may occur when competition increases between geographic areas over a particular sector of trade and production. The effect and intent of these actions is to lower labor rates, cost of business, or other factors (pensions, environmental protection and other externalities), and thus the metaphor where the bottom is the lowest wage that can be paid.
