The United Express Flight 3411 incident occurred when airport police forcibly removed a commercial airline passenger who refused to surrender his seat upon the demand of airline management. The incident occurred at Chicago O'Hare Airport just before 5:20 p.m. on April 9, 2017. The passenger, David Dao, screamed as officers pulled him out of his seat, and his face hit an armrest during the struggle. Officers then dragged him, apparently unconscious, by his arms along the aircraft aisle past rows of onlooking passengers. He was later seen with blood around his mouth. Video of the incident recorded by passengers went viral on social media in the U.S., China and Vietnam, resulting in outrage over the violent incident. Politicians expressed concern and called for official investigation. The stock price of parent company United Continental Holdings suffered a brief sharp drop. Flight 3411 is a scheduled commercial passenger flight operated by Republic Airline on behalf of United Express from O'Hare to Louisville International Airport.
United CEO Oscar Muñoz issued an initial statement which appeared to justify the removal of the unwilling passenger. Muñoz also sent an email to United staff referring to Dao as "disruptive" and "belligerent". Muñoz was sharply criticized by the public for his apparently unsympathetic reaction to Dao's treatment. He later issued an amended statement, apologizing and promising that this type of incident would never happen again on United aircraft. He said, "No one should ever be mistreated this way". President of the United States Donald Trump criticized the United Airlines response to their customer, in an interview in the Oval Office with The Wall Street Journal, and called the airline's treatment of their customer "horrible".
