Johnson ”minst erfarne talmannen på ett sekel”

Mike Johnson är i princip okänd bortom ”de skuggiga verandorna och luftkonditionerade kommunhusen i den djupa södern”, skriver AFP om representanthusets nye talman.

Den 51-årige juristen från Louisiana står långt till höger inom Republikanerna. Han är en hårdnackad abortmotståndare, vilket gör honom populär inom det egna partiet, men inte bland donatorer som knappt brydde sig om att stötta honom när han valdes in i representanthuset 2017.

Enligt TT är han den ”minst erfarne talmannen på över ett sekel”.

Han ska ha övertalats att kandidera till talmansposten när det blev klart att han var en av få republikaner som alla i partiet kunde enas om.

James Michael Johnson (born January 30, 1972) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 56th speaker of the United States House of Representatives since October 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Johnson has represented Louisiana's 4th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2017. He was previously the Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference from 2021 to 2023 and the Chair of the Republican Study Committee from 2019 to 2021. A member of the Christian right faction of the Republican Party, Johnson is known for his strong support for a nationwide abortion ban and an end to legal same-sex marriages. He has called for the Supreme Court decision Obergefell v. Hodges to be overturned and for medical marijuana to be restricted, referring to the latter as a "gateway drug". In December 2020, Johnson signed an amicus brief in support of Texas v. Pennsylvania, a lawsuit filed at the Supreme Court contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election. In January 2021, Johnson voted to overturn the election results in Pennsylvania. Johnson has cultivated close ties to Protestant fundamentalist groups Louisiana Family Forum, Alliance Defending Freedom, and Focus on the Family. Prior to his career as a politician, he worked with them to "represent churches, pastors and congregants whose vision of religious freedom conflicted with government regulations". Johnson supports ending American military aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia.He has served as vice chair of the House Republican Conference since 2021. Johnson previously chaired the House Republican Study Committee, the largest caucus of conservatives in Congress, for one term, as well as a coalition of socially and fiscally conservative members of the larger House Republican Conference. Prior to his service in Congress, Johnson served two incomplete terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives for the 8th district in Bossier Parish, where he succeeded Jeff R. Thompson following his resignation, until he himself resigned to take his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. On October 24, 2023, after three votes by the Republican conference, Johnson became the fourth Republican nominee for Speaker of the House in the October 2023 speakership election, following the failed candidacies of Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer. He received 128 votes on the third ballot.On October 25, 2023, he was elected the 56th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. He is the least experienced Speaker in terms of House service in 140 years.
