Socialist hävdar seger – ny valomgång väntar Ecuador
Under söndagen har Ecuador röstat om president Lenín Morenos efterträdare och två vallokalsundersökningar visar starkt stöd för socialisten och ekonomen Andrés Arauz, rapporterar La República. Enligt de initiala mätningarna får han runt 35 procent av rösterna mot högerpolitikern och affärsmannen Guillermo Lassos dryga 21 procent.
Arauz skriver på Twitter att han och partiet har vunnit valet, men väntar med jublet tills de officiella siffrorna presenteras.
Nationella valrådet väntas publicera ett preliminärt resultat under natten, svensk tid. Eftersom ingen av de totalt 16 kandidaterna fick tillräckligt högt stöd kommer en andra valomgång att genomföras den 11 april.

General elections are scheduled to be held in Ecuador on 7 February 2021. Incumbent president Lenín Moreno, who has held the office since his victory over Guillermo Lasso in 2017, is not seeking reelection. The National Electoral Council (CNE) has established the date for the first round of the presidential election as 7 February, at which time there will also be a vote about mining in Cuenca. Francis Fukuyama described 2020 as having brought "mostly bad news regarding the state of global democracy" in a Wall Street Journal article on December 15 of the same year, specifically citing Ecuador as an example of "severe crises of authority" due to the economic recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.While the issue of potential delay in the election was raised, on 15 December 2020, the CNE clarified that there would not be a shift in the electoral calendar, and confirmed that the elections would take place in February 2021.
