Världens blickar på Tuvalu när 16 parlamentariker väljs
Ovanligt stort intresse riktas mot Stilla havs-nationen Tuvalu inför parlamentsvalet på fredag, skriver AP och The Guardian. Landets 11 000 invånare ska rösta in medlemmar till det 16 mandat stora parlamentet.
Det stora intresset beror på Kinas ökade inflytande i regionen och att Tuvalu är ett av tolv länder som har diplomatiska relationer med Taiwan. Den närliggande ön Nauru valde nyligen att bryta med Taiwan för att i stället närma sig Kina.
Tuvalus finansminister Seve Paeniu siktar på premiärministerposten och har sagt att han vill utvärdera relationen med Taiwan och Kina. Flera andra ledande kandidater, bland andra sittande premiärminister Kausea Natano, har dock lovat att trofast stå vid Taiwans sida.

Taiwan, formally known as the Republic of China (ROC), currently has formal diplomatic relations with 11 of the 193 United Nations member states and with the Holy See, which governs the Vatican City State, as of 24 January 2024. In addition to these relations, the ROC also maintains unofficial relations with 59 UN member states, one self-declared state (Somaliland), three territories (Guam, Hong Kong, and Macao), and the European Union via its representative offices and consulates under the One-China Principle. In 2021, the Government of the Republic of China had the 33rd largest diplomatic network in the world with 110 offices.Historically, the ROC has fiercely required its diplomatic allies to recognize it as the sole legitimate government of "China", competing for exclusive use of the name "China" with the PRC. During the early 1970s, the ROC was replaced by the PRC as the recognised government of "China" in the UN following Resolution 2758, which also led to the ROC's loss of its key position as a permanent member on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to the PRC in 1971.As international recognition of the ROC continues to dwindle concurrently with the PRC rise as a great power, its policy has changed into a more realistic position of actively seeking dual recognition with the PRC. Today, many international organizations that the ROC participates in use alternative names, including "Chinese Taipei" at FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), among others.
