Världens virologer strider om virusnamn: ”Kaotiskt”
Samtidigt som en hård strid pågår mot coronaviruset sars-cov-2 så för världens virologer en annan kamp: hur virus ska namnges i framtiden. Det skriver Nature.
– Det nuvarande ”systemet” är helt kaotiskt och en stor källa till frustration, säger den australiska virologen Edward Holmes.
Det saknas ett standardiserat system för att namnge olika virus. Organisationen ICTV har därför föreslagit ett enhetligt system som ska upp till omröstning i oktober.
Det finns redan vissa förhållningsregler, bland annat att namnen ska vara korta, men trots det har namn som ”Tomato yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus” slunkit igenom. Ett av förslagen är att alla namn i framtiden bara får innehålla två ord.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) authorizes and organizes the taxonomic classification of and the nomenclatures for viruses. The ICTV has developed a universal taxonomic scheme for viruses, and thus has the means to appropriately describe, name, and classify every virus that affects living organisms. The members of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses are considered expert virologists. The ICTV was formed from and is governed by the Virology Division of the International Union of Microbiological Societies. Detailed work, such as delimiting the boundaries of species within a family, typically is performed by study groups of experts in the families.
