Historielärare och veterinär möts i presidentvalet

I dag går uruguayanerna till valurnorna för att rösta i presidentvalets andra omgång.

På ena sidan finns Yamandú Orsi, tidigare historielärare, som tillhör Vänsteralliansen Frente Amplio (Breda fronten). Han möter den tidigare veterinären Álvaro Delgado från konservativa Nationella partiet som haft makten de senaste fem åren, skriver AFP.

Orsi fick 43,9 procent av rösterna i den första valomgången och ses som arvtagare till expresidenten José ”Pepe” Mujica som mellan 2010–2015 blev känd som ”världens fattigaste president” på grund av sin blygsamma livsstil.

Motståndaren Delgado fick 26,7 procent. Men trots Orsis utskåpning i den första valomgången har vänsterkandidaten bara en marginell ledning i opinionsundersökningarna, enligt nyhetsbyrån.

Yamandú Ramón Antonio Orsi Martínez (born 13 June 1967) is a Uruguayan politician who served as the 22nd and 24th intendant of the Canelones Department from 2015 to February 2020, and from November 2020 to 2024. He is member of the left-wing Movement of Popular Participation, a constituent party of the Broad Front. He is a candidate for president of Uruguay in the 2024 general election. Graduated from the Instituto de Profesores Artigas in 1991 as a History teacher, he taught in different liceos (secondary schools) in the Canelones, Florida, and Maldonado Departments. He began to be a political militant during his adolescence, being part of the Vertiente Artiguista until 1990, when he joined the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP) that had been founded the previous year. In 2015 he was elected Intendant of Canelones, and in 2020 he was re-elected in the position.

Álvaro Luis Delgado Ceretta (born 11 March 1969) is a Uruguayan veterinarian and politician of the National Party (PN), who served as the 18th Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic from 2020 to 2023. He also previously served as National Representative from 2005 to 2015, as well as Senator from 2015 to 2020. He is a candidate for president of Uruguay in the 2024 general election. Born in Montevideo and graduated from the University of the Republic in 1995 with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary and Veterinary Technology, Delgado has a postgraduate degree in Agroindustrial Management in the School of Management and International Studies of the ORT University of Uruguay. After graduating he started working as a rural producer and was a veterinary advisor in agricultural establishments.
