Djokovic: ”Vi vill inte separera oss från ATP”

Novak Djokovics nya spelarorganisation Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) har skapat kontrovers i tennisvärlden. ATP har motsatt sig initiativet och menar att coronapandemin har gjort sammanhållningen inom sporten viktigare än någonsin.

Men världsettan Djokovic anser inte att de två organisationerna befinner sig i en konkurrenssituation.

– Vi har aldrig sagt att vi vill bojkotta eller separera oss från ATP eller något annat i den stilen. Vi vill arbeta tillsammans i det här ekosystemet med ATP och alla andra, säger Djokovic efter att han blivit klar för den tredje omgången i ATP-turneringen i Rom, enligt Reuters.

PTPA startade av den 33-årige serben och tre andra spelare i syfte att ta till vara på spelarnas intressen och villkor.

The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) is a proposed association of male tennis players. The group will represent singles players in the top 500 and doubles players in the top 200 of the ATP Rankings. It was founded by players who had previously been members of the Association of Tennis Professionals Players Council. Members of the PTPA include Novak Djokovic, the outgoing president of the Council, and Vasek Pospisil, the pair will initially serve as co-presidents of the PTPA for a two-year period. The Association will be governed by a board of trustees of nine members, to be elected annually.

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) is the principal organizing body of men's professional tennis. It was formed in September 1972 by Donald Dell, Jack Kramer, and Cliff Drysdale to protect the interests of professional tennis players, and Drysdale became the first President. Since 1990, the association has organized the ATP Tour, the worldwide tennis tour for men and linked the title of the tour with the organization's name. It is the governing body of men's professional tennis. In 1990 the organization was called the ATP Tour, which was renamed in 2001 as just ATP and the tour being called ATP Tour.
