The 2019 Hong Kong anti-extradition bill protests are a series of ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong and other cities around the world against the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 proposed by the Hong Kong government.
The protests arose on concerns that such legislation would blur the demarcation between the legal systems in Hong Kong and the mainland, subjecting Hong Kong residents and those passing through the region to de facto jurisdiction of the CCP-controlled courts on the mainland. The movement gained momentum when the 28 April demonstration attracted an estimated 130,000 protesters. The 9 June protest calling for the withdrawal of the bill and resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam was attended by 240,000 people according to the police, or over a million people as the organisers claimed. Similar protests were also launched in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Sydney and Taipei.
On 12 June, the day the government attempted to table the bill for second reading, the protest outside the government headquarters escalated into violent clashes. Police fired tear gas, beanbag rounds and rubber bullets at largely peaceful protesters and declared it a "riot". Further controversy arose over the use of excessive force by the police. On 16 June, according to the organizers of the protest, a historic record of nearly two million people turned out in demonstration demanding complete withdrawal of the bill, release of arrested protesters, accountability of police brutality, and resignation of Lam, notwithstanding the Chief Executive Carrie Lam's announcement a day earlier of a pause in the passage of the bill. Police estimated a maximum of 338,000 marchers. Several protests were organised and more protests are planned as the protester's request still remain unsatisfied.
