Gina Haspel blir CIA-chef – första kvinnan på jobbet

Gina Haspel kommer att bli ny CIA-chef när den nuvarande chefen Mike Pompeo tar över rollen som utrikesminister, skriver USA:s president Donald Trump på Twitter.

Det är första gången som en kvinna får jobbet som chef för den amerikanska underättelsetjänsten.

– Hon är ju en insider från CIA och här valde Trump att förlita sig på den långa erfarenhet hon kommer med, säger Frida Stranne, USA-forskare vid Högskolan i Halmstad och Uppsala universitet till TT.

Haspel var under 00-talet chef för program inom CIA där terrormisstänkta personer ska ha torterats. Hon har också anklagats för att ha försökt förstöra videofilmer och dokumentation från de brutala förhören. Hon har dock gott rykte och är respekterad inom organisationen, skriver The New York Times.

Gina Cheri Haspel (born October 1, 1956) is an American intelligence officer. She joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1985. In February 2017 she was appointed by President Donald Trump as Deputy Director of the CIA. She is the "first female career CIA officer" to receive that appointment, although she is the second woman, as Avril Haines had been appointed by Barack Obama in 2013. On March 13, 2018, Gina Haspel was nominated to be the Director of the CIA, the first woman to be so.

The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (D/CIA) is a statutory office (50 U.S.C. § 3036) that functions as the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, which in turn is a part of the United States Intelligence Community. Since February 2017, the D/CIA has been a cabinet-level position. The Director reports to the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and is assisted by the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Director is a civilian or a general/flag officer of the armed forces nominated by the President, with the concurring or nonconcurring recommendation from the DNI, and must be confirmed by a majority vote of the Senate.
