Dina Habib Powell (Dina Habib Coptic: Ⲇⲓⲛⲁ Ϩⲁⲃⲓⲃ, Arabic: دينا حبيب; born June 12, 1973) is an executive in both the financial and non-profit sectors, a philanthropist, and a U.S. policymaker. She was the U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategy to President Donald Trump. She had an influential role in determining the first year of the administration's foreign policy, especially in regard to Middle East policy. She was also an Assistant to the President and Senior Counselor for Economic Initiatives, a position – demanding about 20 percent of her time – that continued after her security appointment. She left the administration in early 2018. Powell remains within the political orbit of the White House; close to Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka, and her husband Jared Kushner, and is also a close political confidante of former Trump Chief Economic Adviser Gary Cohn. Powell focused on Middle Eastern policy, and her achievements included helping to direct the Administration's policies of improving relations with Saudi Arabia.
Prior to accepting these White House positions, Powell was a managing director and partner at Goldman Sachs and president of its non-profit subsidiary, the Goldman Sachs Foundation, wherein she ran the foundation's 10,000 Women program. As of 2018, she has since returned to work for the company. Before her first stint there, she served in the George W. Bush administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Deputy Undersecretary of State for Public Affairs and Public Diplomacy, and an Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel.Powell was born in Egypt and immigrated with her family to Texas at a young age. She is a lifelong member of the Republican Party. Ethnically she states that she is of mostly Coptic ancestry, from the north coast of Egypt, with some Greek ancestry through her maternal line. She speaks fluent Arabic and retains an Arab-American identity and a strong connection to her country of birth.
Powell is currently a leading candidate for the position of Ambassador to the United Nations. Aides to Trump regarded her brief tenure as a national security adviser in the administration as competent and effective. However, according to press reports, Powell has repeatedly been critical of Trump's temperament and suitability for office in private, particularly his response to the Charlottesville marches, and expressed concern that a professional association with Trump could damage her career. Her prospective nomination has drawn bipartisan support from current and former government officials, but also widespread criticism from among Trump's base. Reportedly, Powell has told colleagues she is leaning toward staying at Goldman Sachs, rather than returning to the Administration, though she continues to deliberate.
