Anastacia Lyn Newkirk ( AN-ə-STAY-zhə; born September 17, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and record producer.
Among the most successful artists in the history of world music, since her debut she has released eight albums and two compilations, selling over 50 million records worldwide, and collecting a total of 227 gold and platinum certifications. Gifted with one of the most powerful and easily recognizable voices, thanks to her distinctive tone she has been described as “the little lady with the big voice”.
Considered the first artist in history to break down barriers between white and black performers in soul music, she has been praised for introducing an unusual female vocal style. Anastacia defines her musical style as “sprock”, meaning a fusion of soul, pop, and rock. The music industry regards her style as unique.
She enjoys great success in Europe, Oceania, Asia, Africa, and South America, while in her home country, the United States, she has achieved comparatively less success. In 2009, she received the World Artist Award at the Women’s World Awards as an artist who influenced the world through her music.
Singing was Anastacia's third career choice. She has disclosed several health issues, including Crohn's disease and two instances of breast cancer. In recognition of her charitable efforts in breast cancer awareness, Anastacia became the second woman ever to receive the Humanitarian Award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2013.
Anastacia began her career in 1983 as a dancer. In 1990, she started her music career as a backing vocalist. In 2000, she released I’m Outta Love, her debut single, which quickly topped charts worldwide and paved the way for her first album, Not That Kind. The following year, she released her second album Freak of Nature, featuring international hits such as Paid My Dues, One Day in Your Life, and Why’d You Lie to Me. In 2004, she released her self-titled album Anastacia, preceded by the single Left Outside Alone, which remained number one across European charts for 15 weeks. In 2005, she released her Greatest Hits compilation Pieces of a Dream, led by the single of the same name.
After switching record labels, she returned in 2008 with Heavy Rotation, which ranked tenth in a Billboard magazine poll of the best albums of 2008. In 2012, she released It’s a Man’s World, an album of covers of male rock songs. In 2014, six years after her last original album, she released Resurrection, marking her return to the “sprock” style. Its lead single was Stupid Little Things.
In 2015, she released a second compilation, Ultimate Collection, featuring the singles Take This Chance and Army of Me. On December 16, 2016, she released her first live album, A 4 App, via the Pledge Music platform. In 2017, she released her seventh studio album, Evolution. In 2023, she released Our Songs, an album of English-language reinterpretations of German songs, which reached the top 10 in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
Anastacia has never hidden her personal struggles with serious illnesses that slowed down her career, including Crohn’s disease and supraventricular tachycardia. She also survived breast cancer twice, first in 2003 and again in 2013. She overcame the latter through a double mastectomy which led to ten further surgeries and five outpatient procedures. For her dedication and commitment to prevention, Anastacia became the second woman in the world to receive the Humanitarian Award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2013, following Annie Lennox.
