Pences utmaning: Försvara Trump efter en tung vecka

Natten till onsdag drabbar vicepresidentkandidaterna Mike Pence, republikan, och Tim Kaine, demokrat, samman i sin enda debatt inför presidentvalet den 8 november. I debatten kommer Pence tvingas försvara Donald Trump, som haft en av sina tyngre veckor under kampanjen. NY Times har publicerat uppgifter om att kandidaten kan ha undgått att betala federal skatt under 18 år och Trumps uttalanden om en före detta Miss Universum-vinnares vikt har inte velat släppa taget.
”Det allra viktigast att VP:n (vicepresidenten) inte gör bort sig och på så sätt medverkar till att sänka sin presidentkandidat. En VP vinner inte valet men hen kan stjälpa det om det vill sig illa”, skriver Frida Stranne, forskare och expert på amerikansk politik, på sajten Expressen Geo. Ett sådant känt exempel, konstaterar Stranne, var John McCains val av Sarah Palin i valet 2008.

Timothy Michael "Tim" Kaine (born February 26, 1958) is an American attorney and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Virginia. A Democrat, Kaine was elected to the Senate in 2012 and is the nominee of his party for Vice President of the United States in the 2016 election. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Kaine grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, graduated from the University of Missouri, and earned a law degree from Harvard Law School before entering private practice and becoming a lecturer at the University of Richmond School of Law. He was first elected to public office in 1994, when he won a seat on the Richmond, Virginia, City Council. He was then elected mayor of Richmond in 1998, serving in that position until being elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2001. Kaine was elected governor of Virginia in 2005, serving from 2006 to 2010. He was chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011. On July 22, 2016, Hillary Clinton announced that she had selected Kaine to be her vice presidential running mate in the 2016 presidential election, and the 2016 Democratic National Convention nominated him on July 27.

Michael Richard "Mike" Pence (born June 7, 1959) is an American politician, attorney, and the 50th Governor of Indiana. He is the Republican Party nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election. After losing two bids for a U.S. congressional seat in 1988 and 1990, he became a conservative radio and TV talk show host from 1994 to 1999. Pence successfully ran for Congress in 2000 and represented Indiana's 2nd congressional district and Indiana's 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013, rising to the position of chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2009 to 2011. In 2012 Pence was elected the 50th Governor of Indiana. In the midst of a re-election campaign for governor, Pence surfaced in July 2016 as the vice presidential running mate for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Pence is a conservative and a supporter of the Tea Party movement.
