Forskare vill rädda Romeo – hotad singelgroda i Bolivia
En groda i ett akvarium på ett naturhistoriskt museum i Bolivia kan vara den sista av sitt slag. Forskare söker i vattendrag och floder efter en hona för att kunna starta ett avelsprogram, skriver BBC.
Dessutom har forskarna lagt ut en dejtingannons på nätet för att väcka uppmärksamhet.
– Vi vill inte att han ska förlora hoppet, säger forskaren Arturo Munoz.
Grodan är av arten telmatobius yuracare och har fått namnet Romeo.
Sökandet är också en kamp mot klockan. Grodor av Romeos slag lever oftast inte mer än 15 år, vilket med tanke på hans nuvarande ålder innebär att man har omkring fem år på sig att rädda arten.

The Sehuencas water frog (Telmatobius yuracare) is a species of frog in the Telmatobiidae family. It is endemic to Bolivia. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, rivers, and freshwater marshes. It is threatened by habitat loss.
There is one individual currently in captivity called "Romeo;" there are fears that Romeo is the last of his kind, an endling. Romeo is 10 years old, and individuals of this species often do not live past age 15. He lives in the Cochabamba Natural History Museum, which is in Bolivia. Bolivian conservationists have been looking for other Sehuencas water frog individuals, particularly females, in hopes of creating a captive breeding program. To raise awareness and money about the plight of the Sehuencas water frog, conservationists created a profile for Romeo on an online dating website.
While it is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, this is based on an assessment that has not been updated since 2004. No individuals have been encountered in the wild since 2008.
