Wallström beklagar: Valet ett hot mot demokratin

Constitutional Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Venezuela on 30 July 2017. Unlike the 1999 Constitutional Assembly, which was assembled following a referendum, the 2017 election was convened by the presidential decree of President Nicolás Maduro. Approximately two-thirds of Constitutional Assembly members will be elected by municipal citizens while social groups which include workers unions, communal councils and peasants, will elect the remaining one-third of members. Following the opposition's refusal to contest the election, all candidates of the Constitutional Assembly were selected by and support Maduro's Bolivarian government. The upcoming regional and presidential elections may also be delayed from their planned dates under a new constitution since no timeline was given for the rewrite. The international community, including multiple nations of the Americas and Europe along with supranational bodies such as Mercosur and the Organization of American States, have condemned the election stating it would only further escalate tensions.
