Oppositionsledaren brukar traditionellt tilldelas upphöjda positioner, exempelvis ordförandestolen i parlamentets budgetkommitté, skriver The Guardian.

Alternative for Germany (German: Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) is a right-wing populist and Eurosceptic political party in Germany.
Founded in April 2013, the party won 4.7% of the votes in the 2013 federal election, narrowly missing the 5% electoral threshold to sit in the Bundestag. In 2014 the party won 7.1% of the votes and 7 out of 96 German seats in the European election, and was a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group until AfD was expelled from that group in April 2016, following AfD's alliance with the Freedom Party of Austria and after AfD leaders made controversial remarks about shooting immigrants. During the AfD party convention on 30 April 2016, one of the two remaining AfD members of the EU Parliament, Marcus Pretzell, announced his intention to join the Europe of Nations and Freedom group, the faction which includes France's National Front.
As of May 2017, the AfD had gained representation in 13 of the 16 German state parliaments. The party is currently led by Frauke Petry and Jörg Meuthen.
