Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, (Andrew Albert Christian Edward; born 19 February 1960) is a member of the British royal family. He is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and a younger brother of King Charles III. At birth Andrew was second in the line of succession to the British throne, and is now eighth, and the first person in the line who is not a descendant of the reigning monarch.
He served in the Royal Navy between 1979 and 2001 as a helicopter pilot and instructor and as the captain of a warship. During the Falklands War he flew on multiple missions including anti-surface warfare, casualty evacuation and Exocet missile decoy. Andrew married Sarah Ferguson in 1986, and was created Duke of York on his wedding day. They have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Their marriage, separation in 1992 and divorce in 1996 attracted extensive media coverage. Andrew served as the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment from 2001 to 2011, resigning amid scrutiny over his expenses and associations with figures including Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and the convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He continued to undertake official duties on behalf of Elizabeth II until 2019.
In 2014, Virginia Giuffre alleged that, as a 17-year-old, she had been sex trafficked to Andrew by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Andrew denied any wrongdoing. Maxwell was later convicted of child sex trafficking in 2021. Amid growing criticism of his associations with Epstein and Maxwell, he permanently stepped back from public roles in May 2020. Between August 2021 and February 2022, he was the defendant in a civil lawsuit over sexual assault filed by Giuffre in the United States. The lawsuit was settled out of court, with Andrew paying an undisclosed sum to Giuffre without any admission of liability. In 2022, Elizabeth II removed his honorary military affiliations and royal charitable patronages, and he stopped using the style "His Royal Highness". On 17 October 2025, amidst ongoing controversy surrounding his association with Epstein, Andrew agreed to stop using his other titles and honours, with the exception of the style "prince". However following continued criticism, on 30 October 2025 Buckingham Palace announced that formal procedures to strip him of all titles and honours, including the style of "Prince", had commenced and that he "will now be known as "Andrew Mountbatten Windsor."
