Flera ministrar tar strid för att efterträda Johnson

Storbritanniens nytillträdde finansminister Nadhim Zahawi och transportministern Grant Shapps ger sig in i kampen om att bli Torypartiets nya ledare efter Boris Johnson. Det rapporterar brittiska medier.

Enligt The Guardian har Zahawi, som tidigare var utbildningsminister, bland annat lovat sänkta skatter och reformer inom sitt tidigare område. Shapps förespråkar även han sänkta skatter. Han vill också se ökat statligt stöd till företag med hög energiförbrukning.

Under lördagskvällen meddelade även Sajid Javid och Jeremy Hunt, båda tidigare hälsoministrar att de kandiderar. Enligt brittiska medier väntas även utrikesminister Liz Truss meddela sin kandidatur inom kort.

Beskeden kommer efter att försvarsminister Ben Wallace, en av favoriterna inom partiet, tidigare under lördagen meddelat att han inte kandiderar.

Nadhim Zahawi (Arabic: ناظم الزهاوي, romanized: Nāẓim az-Zahāwī; born 2 June 1967) is an Iraqi-born Kurdish-British politician serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer since 5 July 2022. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Stratford-on-Avon since 2010. He was Secretary of State for Education from 2021 to 2022 and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment from 2020 to 2021 in the Second Johnson ministry.Born in Baghdad to a Kurdish family, Zahawi was co-founder of international Internet-based market research firm YouGov of which he was chief executive until February 2010. A chemical engineer in his earlier career, he was chief strategy officer for Gulf Keystone Petroleum until January 2018. After the retirement of previous Conservative MP John Maples, he was elected for Stratford-upon-Avon at the 2010 general election. Zahawi joined Theresa May's government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families in the 2018 cabinet reshuffle. Following Boris Johnson's appointment as Prime Minister, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business and Industry, and in 2020 he was given additional responsibility for the COVID-19 vaccination programme as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for COVID-19 Vaccine Deployment. In the 2021 cabinet reshuffle he was promoted to Johnson's cabinet as Secretary of State for Education. On 5 July 2022, he became the Chancellor of the Exchequer after the resignation of Rishi Sunak. Less than 48 hours later, Zahawi withdrew his support for Johnson and publicly called on him to resign, which Johnson did shortly afterwards.

Grant Shapps (born 14 September 1968) is a British politician serving as Secretary of State for Transport since 2019. A member of the Conservative Party, he has been Member of Parliament (MP) for Welwyn Hatfield since 2005. He was elected for Welwyn Hatfield at the 2005 general election. Following David Cameron's appointment as Prime Minister, Shapps was appointed Minister of State for Housing and Local Government. In the 2012 cabinet reshuffle he was promoted to the Cabinet as Chairman of the Conservative Party and Minister without Portfolio. In May 2015, he was demoted from the Cabinet, becoming Minister of State for International Development. In November 2015, he stood down from this post due to allegations of bullying within the Conservative Party. After he supported Boris Johnson's 2019 Conservative leadership bid, when Johnson became Prime Minister, he appointed Shapps as Transport Secretary in July. Since Shapps assumed the role it has exercised greater influence than under his predecessors, with the effective nationalisation of the Northern Trains franchise, the Williams-Shapps Review to move from a rail franchise system to concessionary Great British Railways public body (from 2023), COVID-19 travel restrictions to and from the United Kingdom, and the Integrated Rail Plan published in 2021 which sets out the long-term strategy for rail in northern England and the Midlands. In July 2022, it was announced that Shapps was considering running for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
