Förgiftningen i Salisbury
Wikipedia (en)
On 4 March 2018, former Russian military intelligence officer and British spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in Salisbury, England, with a Novichok nerve agent. As of 26 March 2018, the pair remained critically ill in hospital and doctors have indicated they may never fully recover. An investigating police officer also fell seriously ill and was released on 22 March. UK intelligence officials and police have identified 38 people as being affected by the nerve agent. In the 1990s, Sergei Skripal was an officer for Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and worked as a double agent for the UK's Secret Intelligence Service from 1995 until his arrest in Moscow in December 2004. He was convicted of high treason and sentenced to 13 years in a penal colony by a Russian court in 2006. He settled in the UK in 2010 following the Illegals Program spy swap. Yulia Skripal is a Russian citizen, who was visiting her father from Moscow at the time of the poisoning, and Sergei is a British citizen. On 14 March, after accusing the Russian Federation of attempted murder, British government officials announced punitive measures against Russia, including the expulsion of numerous diplomats accused of being intelligence agents. The UK received support from the United States and other allies while Russia denied the accusations. The European Union, NATO, and many individual countries also took similar punitive measures against Russia. On 26 March, the United States ordered the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomatic officers and the closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle. On the same day, a further 33 Russian diplomats were expelled from another 21 countries in a co-ordinated diplomatic response.
