USA kan lätta på sanktioner mot Rusal

USA kan lätta på sanktionerna mot den ryska aluminiumproducenten Rusal, om bolagets ägare Oleg Deripaska frånsäger sig kontrollen. Det skriver flera medier och hänvisar till ett meddelande på det amerikanska finansdepartementets hemsida.

Deripaska är en av sju ryska oligarker som sedan början på april är föremål för amerikanska sanktioner som syftar till att sätta stopp för vad Vita huset kallar Moskvas ”skadliga aktiviteter”, skriver Reuters.

Nyheten fick aluminiumpriserna att sjunka kraftigt och var ner så mycket som 8,3 procent. Det är den största nedgången på en dag sedan 2005, enligt Bloomberg.

United Company RUSAL (Russian: ОК РУСАЛ, translit. OK RUSAL) is the world's second largest aluminium company by primary production output (as of 2016). It was the largest until overtaken by China Hongqiao Group in 2015. UC RUSAL accounts for almost 9% of the world's primary aluminium output and 9% of the world's alumina production. The United Company was formed by the merger of RUSAL (Russkiy alyuminiy) (Russian: Русский алюминий), SUAL, and the alumina assets of Glencore, completed in March 2007. According to its own statistics, UC Rusal accounts for 6.2% of the world's primary aluminium output and 6.5% of the world's alumina production, while operating assets in 13 countries over five continents, employing over 61,000 people across its international operations and offices. The company is incorporated in Jersey, where it has its financial centre, but its headquarters are in Moscow, Russian Federation. UC Rusal is a public limited company and its shares are traded on the Moscow Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and European Stock Exchange.

Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska (Russian: Оле́г Влади́мирович Дерипа́ска; born January 2, 1968) is a Russian oligarch, aluminium magnate and philanthropist. He is the founder and owner of one of the largest Russian industrial groups Basic Element. He was the president of En+ Group and United Company Rusal, the second largest aluminium company in the world, until 2018. After graduating from Moscow State University with a degree in physics, Deripaska became a metals broker specialized in trading aluminium before expanding into energy, machinery, financial services and agribusiness. In 2000, Deripaska founded Rusal, the result of a partnership between Sibirsky Aluminium and Roman Abramovich's Millhouse Capital. In 2007, Rusal merged with SUAL Group and Glencore International AG to form UC Rusal, with Deripaska as chairman. He was once Russia's richest man, worth $28 billion, but nearly lost everything due to mounting debts amid the 2007–08 financial crisis. As of May 2017, his wealth was estimated by Forbes at $5.2 billion. Deripaska is also known for his close ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin, as well as his connection to American political consultant Paul Manafort, whom Deripaska employed from at least 2005 to 2009. Deripaska is also the founder of Volnoe Delo, Russia's largest charitable foundation, and is reported to have donated more than $250 million to mostly educational causes. He is married to Polina Yumasheva, step-granddaughter of former Russian President Boris Yeltsin and daughter of Valentin Yumashev, Yeltsin's son-in-law and close advisor. Deripaska was also granted Cypriot citizenship in 2017.
