Andrea Jacqueline Leadsom (pronounced /ˈlɛdsəm/; née Salmon; born 13 May 1963) is a British politician. She studied Political Science at the University of Warwick, and then became a trader for Barclays. She was first elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for South Northamptonshire at the 2010 general election. Leadsom has served as Minister of State for Energy at the Department of Energy and Climate Change since 11 May 2015, having held the post of Economic Secretary to the Treasury from April 2014. She previously opposed leaving the EU and opined that it would be a "disaster" for the British economy, but in 2016 she supported the Leave campaign during the 2016 EU referendum. On David Cameron's resignation, Leadsom became one of five candidates in the election for the leadership of the Conservative party and to become the next Prime Minister. She won the votes of 84 MPs, second to Theresa May who had the backing of 199 MPs in the second round votes, also eliminating fellow Brexit campaigner Michael Gove. This made her the only remaining competitor with May in the leadership race, ensuring that one of them would be the second female British Prime Minister, after fellow Conservative Margaret Thatcher. Conservative members will now decide the winning candidate to become the new Prime Minister, with the result due on 9 September. She has come under criticism for misrepresenting or exaggerating her professional experience.
